The National Park of New South Wales was proclaimed Australia's first national park on 26 April 1879. The National Park, to become the Royal National Park after the 1957 visit from Queen Elizabeth II, was the second oldest national park in the world after Yellowstone, which was established in the US in 1872. The development and extension of railway lines as well as increasing levels of car ownership throughout the twentieth century meant that the Royal National Park became a more accessible destination than ever before. This unique natural environment remains close to the hearts of many Sydneysiders today. Balancing the objectives of leisure and conservation, the 1902 Trustees of the National Park published an Official Guide to the National Park. The 2011 edition of this publication is a facsimile reprint of this historical document and includes all the photographs and maps of the original.
